One of the most beautiful and cosmopolitan islands of the Saronic Gulf. Known as Pityousa in antiquity, as it has many pines, it got its current name during the Venetian occupation, due to the many fragrant flowers on the island (isola di spezzie, ie island of perfumes). Spetses emerged as one of the strongest naval and commercial forces in the Aegean, while at the outbreak of the Greek Revolution, many Spetses captains, such as Laskarina Bouboulina, deployed their significant naval power in the Struggle.
Today, Spetses is an ideal destination for short getaways all year round, but also for summer vacations. The cosmopolitan and aristocratic aura of Spetses, diffused on the island, the wonderful beaches, the wonderful architecture and the cosmopolitan Old Port will enchant you at first sight, when you first visit it. Armata (the celebration of the anniversary of the Battle of Spetses) every September, the sports events Spetses Mini Marathon, Spetsathlon, as well as the International Race of Classic and Traditional Boats of Spetses (Spetses Classic Yacht Regatta) will be a great occasion to visit each year.
Spetses is one of the most cosmopolitan and historical islands of the Saronic Gulf and is located opposite the famous tourist resort of Porto Heli. The island of Bouboulina is famous for its neoclassical architecture, wonderful beaches and impressive locations that are offered for exploration. The new port, Dapia, is the center of Spetses, where you will find restaurants with delicious food, as well as shops for drinks and entertainment.
Cars are not allowed on the island, but you can rent a motorbike or bicycle. The beaches on the north side, which are the best, can be reached by boat or sea taxi from the port or by your own means. Closer to the center is the beach of Agia Marina with the organized beach. Opposite is the famous Spetsopoulo, the island of Niarchos. The old port and Kounoupitsa, east and west of the port respectively, are the two main attractions beyond Dapia.
The past of this place is 5,000 years old – the beaked bottles, dating from 3,000 BC. in archeological excavations on the island, certify its long history. Neoclassical houses, captain’s houses, ancient anchors, cannons from the revolution of 1821. The people of Spetses will tell you the great naval history of their island.
Do not miss the mansion that houses the museum of Bouboulina, where many of her personal belongings are exhibited. Also, the house-museum of Hatzigiannis-Mexis, one of the most special mansions of Spetses, where the bones of the heroic captainess are kept. In special rooms of the museum you will also find finds from the ancient Shipwreck of the Irias, dating from 1,200 BC.
Activities
The first thing you have to try is to explore Spetses in a ride with carriage. Live like the surnames that arrived in Poseidon by car. If you love nature activities, the island has several trails for hiking and cycling, especially in the forest of Spetses. The triathlon race that takes place every year in Spetses, the Spetsathlon, has a significant impact in recent years.
Hundreds of visitors arrive on the island for the great Armata festival that takes place every year on September 8, in memory of the naval battle of Spetses of 1822. In addition to the impressive sparklers and religious ceremonies, you will experience a week rich in cultural events.
Sights
When you arrive at Spetses, do not miss the opportunity to visit the Museum of Spetses. The glorious history of the island is revealed in the magnificent mansion of the 18th century, owned by the Hatzigianni – Mexi family (first governor of the island).
Housed in the family mansion of the legendary heroine of the Greek Revolution, the museum is dedicated to her life and work. The personality of Laskarina Bouboulina, the only woman in the world with the title of Admiral, comes to life through personal objects and historical relics of ’21, such as weapons, old books, paintings, letters, ship models.
One of the most beautiful natural attractions of the island, is located on the beach of Agioi Anargyroi. It is also known as the “Cave of Lovers”, as inside there is a spring that gushes the miraculous “water of love” (according to legend, water strengthens the love of those who drink it).
Spetses macaroons, which smell of cinnamon and cloves, are the most famous local deli. The fish ala Spetsiota, with tomato sauce, originates from here.
